Year 7 Music Programme: New Voices, New Instruments, New Adventures
Published by Kingswood Senior School on Monday 30th of March 2026
Our new Year 7 musicians have launched into Senior School life with a vibrant and joyful start to their musical journey. The year began with plenty of singing, with everything from Bruno Mars to Swing Low, Sweet Chariot getting the group making music together from day one and setting the tone for an exciting year ahead.
Now in the second year of our whole-cohort instrumental programme, every Year 7 pupil is learning an orchestral instrument as part of their curriculum lessons. With specialist teaching across woodwind, brass and strings, students enjoy high‑quality tuition in small groups during the school day, with instruments provided for all in the classroom. These sessions build confidence, spark creativity and lay the foundations of strong musical understanding.
This term has also been enriched by a series of inspiring professional workshops. Expert musicians representing each orchestral family – strings, brass, woodwind and percussion – have visited Kingswood to perform, demonstrate their instruments, and share their passion for orchestral music. These encounters broadened musical horizons and motivated our young performers as they explored the possibilities of their own new instruments.
Ensemble music‑making remains at the heart of the Year 7 experience. Students come together to develop their ensemble skills and experience the thrill of performing as part of a group, with informal showcases offering supportive opportunities to celebrate their progress.
Mr. Andy Barton, Director of Music at Kingswood School, said: “Following the success of last year’s pioneering cohort, it has been wonderful to see some of those students, now in Year 8, perform in their very first Spring Concert as part of the Orchestra this term. Their achievement is a testament to their dedication, hard work and the strong musical foundations nurtured through the Year 7 programme.”
For those keen to continue their musical journey, the pathway is rich with opportunity. At Kingswood, every child is encouraged to discover new talents, enjoy the richness of creative learning and thrive as part of our busy musical community.
